James Whitcomb Riley Made Hay While The Sun Shined In Peru
Did you know that James Whitcomb Riley, the famous poet, once lived in Peru? When Riley was in his 20's he traveled from town to town painting signs and writing poetry. He had a partner by the name of Smith. They set up shop on the second floor of a two story building over a livery stable owned by John and Ben Wallace located on East third between Wabash Street and Broadway. As near as I can place the building it was either where the hotel was or directly behind it. The business was quite successful as they became known in the community. While here he painted a painting called "Making Hay While The Sun Shines"and the other "The Queen of the School". They are at the Miami County Museum.
